When is Eid Milad-Un-Nabi 2019? Date, Significance, History and Importance of Eid E Milad

Eid Milad-Un-Nabi also known as Eid-e-Milad or Mawlid is an Islamic festival celebrated to commemorate the birth of the Prophet Muhammad . The day is dedicated to the Prophet who is believed to be the messenger of God in the Islamic religion. Its origin can be traced back to the 8th century when Muhammad’s house was transformed into a house of prayer by Al-Khayzuran .

For the year 2019, the occasion commemorates on the 10th of November.

On this day, devotees light lamps and decorate their homes and mosques and observe night long prayer meeting. As per the tradition, every year devotees gather and remember the advent of the Prophet’s birth with religious leaders narrating the stories about Mohammad’s life, deeds and teaching. The day is generally marked with public gatherings, preparations for a feast and family get together. The festival focuses on charity and helping the needy. Hence, families share this feast with underprivileged and make donations to the needy.

History, significance and importance
According to legends of Islam, the prophet was born on the twelfth day of Rabee-ul-Awwal (third month of the Islamic lunar calendar ) in Mecca ( Saudi Arabia ) in 570 CE. Initially, the 12th day of Rabi al-Awwal was observed as the day when Prophet Muhammad died and it wasn’t until the 13th century that the Islamic masses began to celebrate Mawlid as his birthday. Since then this tradition is being carried on in different countries. Although a major part of the Islam community still considers this day as inauspicious yet, countless Muslims throughout the globe celebrate the day with utmost fervour and zeal.

Different sects of Islam celebrate the Prophet’s birth on different dates of the month. Several Sunni Muslims celebrate this occasion on the 12th of the Islamic month of Rabi’ al-awwal, while the Shia community observe it on the 17th of Rabi’ al-awwal. It is said that the Shia community believes that on this day the prophet selected Hazrat Ali as his successor and the Sunni community, on the other hand, commemorates this day by holding prayer meetings throughout the day.

On this occasion, hymns are sung in praise of the Prophet. It is commonly believed that listening to those hymes will allow one receive worldly and heavenly rewards. Devotees, therefore, hold mass prayers at the mosques where a preacher recites multiple sermons from the life and deeds of Muhammad to keep up the spirit of Milad-Un-Nabi. Several countries also celebrate the day by taking out large processions in the streets. It is an important day for Muslims all across the globe because the day reminds one of kindness, compassion and the teachings of the Holy Prophet. The devotees of Prophet Mohammad show their reverence and love towards him by observing the day with much passion and dedication.

Some historians trace the origin of the celebrations to Turkey, while others claim it to have originated in Egypt. The devotees who approve of the auspicious Eid E Milad celebrations, claim the presence of several references of Milad-un-Nabi in the holy Quran .
