Can eating onions help control cholesterol levels?

Low-density lipoprotein or LDL levels decreased while high levels of "good cholesterol" were maintained in the hamster groups that consumed the diet high in onions, according to the research team (high-density lipoprotein or HDL).


When compared to the other group not consuming the onion extract, the cholesterol levels of the hamsters that consumed it dropped by 11.2 and 20.3 percent at weeks four and eight, respectively. Although the group that consumed the onion extract has lower cholesterol levels than those of the control hamsters, these differences were not statistically significant, according to the researchers. The study needs more time to prove the effect of onion consumption on cholesterol levels in human bodies.
