Sexually Transmitted Infections: An approach towards preventive measures

In a country where, talking about sex is taboo, sexually transmitted infections are discussed even lesser than the act. There is a massive lack of awareness about STIs, especially on the lines of - how you can get them, and most importantly, how to prevent them?

STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections) are various bacteria, parasites, and viruses that are transmitted via sexual activity such as vaginal, oral, or anal sex.
They have a direct impact on your health (be it overall, sexual, or reproductive), and to avoid widespread contraction, it is vital that one prevent them.

While the only air-tight method to prevent STIs is abstinence, there are other options too. Using protection, specifically latex condoms is very effective while having safe sex to protect against STIs. A more primary stage before one is sexually active is to ensure that all vaccinations are taken as a precautionary method. Know and read up about various STIs such as HPV, Gonorrhoea, Herpes, Syphilis and Chlamydia and their symptoms, if they have any.

A good practice would be to practice monogamy to reduce the risk (if you know your partner is free of any STIs) this may be challenging with unknown partners. As the
consumption of alcohol and drugs leads to poor decision-making, it would be advisable not to mix the two (sexual activity and substances) to not put oneself in the position of having unsafe sex. Not sharing towels and undergarments and cleaning up well post-sexual activities would also be a good practice.

Having that difficult conversation with your partner will save you in the long run from a host of short and long-term difficulties. It’s about taking responsibility, not only for yourself but for your partners too.
