PM Narendra Modi remembers martyrdom of Imam Hussain on day of Ashura

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday remembered the sacrifice of Imam Hussain (AS) on the day of Ashura .


"We recall the sacrifice of Imam Hussain (AS). For him, there was nothing more important than the values of truth and justice. His emphasis on equality as well as fairness are noteworthy and give strength to many," PM tweeted.

This year, in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, the annual procession has been barred in most parts of the country.

The day of Ashura is being observed today across the world to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD.

Sunday is the tenth day of the first month of the Islamic calendar. On this day, Imam Hussain, along with several of his companions and family members were martyred, while his surviving family members were taken prisoners.
