Author Salman Rushdie attacked on stage in NY

Author Salman Rushdie , who was about to give a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution, was attacked on stage in New York on August 12, 2022.

As per an AP report, a man stormed the stage at the Chautauqua Institution and began punching or stabbing Rushdie as he was being introduced. The author was taken or fell to the floor, and the man was restrained.



It's noted that former Booker Prize winner, Salman Rushdie , got years of death threats after his book 'The Satanic Verses ' was published in the 1988.

Many netizens took to Twitter where they shared this shocking news today. English broadcaster-writer Piers Morgan tweeted, "BREAKING: Author Salman Rushdie, the subject of an ongoing fatwa from Iran over his book 'Satanic Verses', sparking many death threats over the years, has been stabbed on stage at the Chautauqua Institution in New York State."


Reacting to the news, author William Dalrymple tweeted, "A terrible day for literature, for freedom of speech and for authors everywhere. Poor poor Salman: I pray he's not hurt and recovers quickly".

PEN International tweeted, "We are deeply concerned by the news that former PEN America President, Salman Rushdie, was attacked today just before giving a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution in New York. We condemn the attack and wish him a fast recovery."

Meanwhile, Rushdie's new book 'Victory City' is expected to be published on February 9, 2023.
