Congress drops Sanjay Nirupam from list of star campaigners, says more action against him soon

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Wednesday dropped Sanjay Nirupam from the list of star campaigners in Maharashtra and announced that action will be taken against him for his remarks against the party. "The way he has been making remarks, it seems he has taken a contract to speak against the party. Action will be taken against him in a day or two.
No notice will be sent to him," Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole said.

Nirupam responded to the news with a dig at the Congress and said he will announce his future course of action tomorrow. "Congress should not waste its energy and stationery on me and instead use whatever little is left in saving the party. It is anyways going through a huge economic crisis. My one-week deadline ends today and I will make an announcement tomorrow," he said in a post on X.

Action against Sanjay Nirupam comes amid reports that he may be on his way out of the party. Nirupam has openly opposed Congress's alliance with Shiv Sena (UBT) in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections . The former Mumbai Congress chief had said the Congress should not allow itself to be arm-twisted by Uddhav Thackeray-led outfit after Shiv Sena (UBT) unilaterally announced 17 candidates.

"Shiv Sena (UBT) arm-twisted the Congress to take five of the six seats in Mumbai. But the Congress should not allow itself to be arm-twisted like this. This action is against the Congress and it's a ploy to finish off the party in the city," the Congress leader had said.

Nirupam, who had lost Lok Sabha elections from Mumbai northwest in 2019, had given the party leadership a week's time to decide and had said that "all options were open for him."

The Maharashtra Congress had objected to the Shiv Sena (UBT) announcing its candidates for the Bhiwandi, Mumbai South Central and Sangli Lok Sabha seats, saying MVA partners must stick to "coalition dharma". Congress Legislature Party leader Balasaheb Thorat had urged Sena (UBT) to reconsider its decision.
