Here's how much Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg earned in 2023

It is understood that being a CEO of the company gets you millions of dollars every month. But that’s not the case with the chief executive of Facebook ’s parent company Meta . About a decade ago, Zuckerberg started a trend of earning only $1 a month salary but just like other top leaders, he is raking in millions.

Million-dollar compensation for Zuckerberg
While Zuckerberg’s salary defies the perception that CEOs of large companies receive enormous monthly salaries, there’s more to it than meets the eye. According to a recent SEC filing, Zuckerberg received a salary of just $1 in 2023, however, his total compensation package reached $24.4 million.

Here's a breakdown of his compensation:

  • Base Salary: $1 (symbolic)
  • Other Compensation: $24.4 million

Notably, 2023’s compensation is essentially a decrease from 2022. That year, the Meta CEO got a total of $27.1 million. The bulk of compensation is covered under the category of "other compensation," which likely includes security costs and make up a significant portion of Zuckerberg's total compensation.

Meta provides Zuckerberg with a pre-tax allowance of $10 million to cover personal security expenses, which reportedly increased to $14 million in 2023. This high cost is justified, according to Meta, due to Zuckerberg's position and the fact that he receives minimal salary and other compensation.

“In February 2023, our compensation, nominating & governance committee approved increasing this annual pre-tax allowance to $14 million, effective immediately,” Meta said in the filing.

Additionally, Meta pays for Zuckerberg's private jet usage at market rates, totaling nearly $1 million in 2023. So, while Zuckerberg's official salary is a mere dollar, his total compensation reflects the significant costs associated with his role as CEO.
