WhatsApp brings passkeys to iPhones: Here's how the feature will work

Earlier this year it was reported that WhatsApp may soon bring passkeys to iPhones. Now the Meta-owned app has started rolling out the passkey feature for iPhone users .

Passkeys offer users the freedom from cumbersome passwords by seamlessly integrating biometrics and secure PINs. Spearheaded by the FIDO Alliance and supported by industry leaders such as Apple , Google , and Microsoft , passkeys herald a new era in online security.
These digital credentials, securely stored in your device's enclave and synchronised across your icloud keychain, eradicate the weaknesses associated with conventional passwords.

After the roll out of passkeys feature, the iPhone users will be able to log into their WhatsApp accounts using FaceID, TouchID or passwords.

How will passkeys work?
iPhone users will seamlessly transition away from passwords or one-time PINs, opting instead for the simplicity of Face ID , Touch ID , or their device passcode. This not only enhances security but also streamlines the login experience, offering both convenience and protection.

WhatsApp's adoption of passkeys aligns with Apple's drive towards passwordless authentication, as seen in iOS 17. This move is part of a larger trend embraced by industry giants like Amazon and Microsoft, reflecting the increasing traction of this secure and user-friendly technology. Additionally, Google has integrated passkey support into Gmail, further solidifying its widespread acceptance.

Passkeys have been endorsed by Apple since 2022 and are compatible with devices running iOS 16 and later, iPadOS 16 and later, as well as macOS Ventura and later versions.
