SC to share cause list, info about filing and listing of cases through WhatsApp: CJI Chandrachud

NEW DELHI: In a landmark move towards digitization , Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud announced on Thursday that the Supreme Court of India will now share crucial information such as cause lists and case filings with advocates through WhatsApp messages. This initiative, deemed to have a "big-bang impact," aims not only to enhance transparency but also to contribute significantly to saving paper and promoting environmental sustainability .

The announcement came as Chief Justice Chandrachud addressed a nine-judge bench convened to deliberate on the legal complexities surrounding the classification of private properties as "material resources of the community" under Article 39(b) of the Constitution.

"In the 75th year of its existence, the Supreme Court launches a small initiative. It has the potential to have a big-bang impact," stated Chief Justice Chandrachud. "To strengthen the right to access to justice and enhance transparency in the judicial system, the Supreme Court announces integration of WhatsApp messaging services with its IT services."

Under this initiative, Advocates-on Records (AoRs) and litigants appearing before the Supreme Court will receive automated messages regarding electronic case filings, cause lists, orders, and judgments directly on WhatsApp. This move aims to streamline communication and provide timely updates to legal practitioners and litigants.

"This is another revolutionary step," remarked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta in response to the announcement.

Chief Justice Chandrachud also unveiled the Supreme Court's official WhatsApp number, 8767687676, emphasizing that it will solely serve as a broadcasting platform and will not accept messages or calls. He expressed optimism about the significant change this digital transition would bring to the court's operational efficiency and its positive impact on environmental conservation.

Furthermore, Chief Justice Chandrachud highlighted the broader digitization efforts within the judiciary, including the migration of services to the Meghraj cloud 2.0 infrastructure developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC). He underscored the importance of video conferencing facilities, particularly in ensuring seamless proceedings even if key stakeholders like investigation officers are unable to attend physically due to transfers.

The Supreme Court's commitment to digital transformation aligns with the government's vision, with Solicitor General Tushar Mehta affirming the central government's dedication to digitizing the judiciary to enhance access to justice for all. The government has allocated significant resources, including Rs 7,000 crore for the e-court project, underscoring its commitment to modernizing the judicial system and ensuring equitable access to justice for all citizens.
