Class X student alleges rape by cousin; gave birth to baby girl who died
Bhubaneswar: A Class X student on Friday lodged a complaint with Dhenkanal police alleging she was raped by her cousin around 10 months ago. The 15-year-old survivor gave birth to a girl in a Angul hospital on Nov 9, who died.
Police said the girl was forced to accompany her cousin while they were travelling to a relative’s house. On the way, he allegedly raped her and threatened her not to reveal the crime to anyone. The survivor, who later realised she was pregnant, said the accused continued to intimidate her for months.
The girl was taken to Cuttack childcare unit where a human rights activist took cognisance of the matter and helped her in lodging a police complaint against the accused. The activist also accompanied her to the Dhenkanal district police office.
SDPO Rajani Kanta Samal told TOI, “We have registered a case. The girl was not able to clearly recall when the crime happened. Both the accused and the girl are from same village. Medical tests will be conducted. Subsequently action will be taken against the accused.”
