Dropped by GFP over BJP links, functionary joins Congress

Newspoint
Panaji: GFP on Friday announced that it suspended advocate Amit Sawant from the party after receiving complaints alleging his involvement in a land conversion deal. It also received inputs that he shares close ties with people linked to BJP.

However, in a dramatic twist, Amit and his wife Surekha joined Congress within 12 hours. GFP and Congress are allies in the state, with GFP president Vijai Sardesai making it clear he wants all the opposition parties to work together for the upcoming zilla panchayat elections.

“We got multiple reports and calls from people of Mandrem telling us that Amit has a big role in land conversion, property transactions, and that these connections of his would hurt the party’s position in Mandrem,” said GFP’s North Goa president, Deepak Kalangutkar.

He added that the issue of land protection remains ‘central’ to GFP’s ideology, and that Amit’s role in land conversion and sale in Mandrem and Pernem undermined its core principles.
