Trura seeks lasting solution to flooding

Kochi: With local body elections approaching, residents of Tripunithura have urged the municipality to implement long-term solutions to persistent waterlogging in the area. Many parts of Tripunithura experience flooding even during light rainfall, causing significant disruption to daily life.

Tripunithura Rajanagari Union of Residents' Associations (Trura) has called for scientific management of canals to address the issue.

Speaking to TOI, Trura convener V C Jayendran highlighted that areas such as Puthussery Nagar, Priya Nagar, Palliparambukavu and MKK Nair Nagar are particularly affected. "Residents are often forced to vacate their homes during monsoon. The drain through Puthussery Nagar, crossing the main road at Kizhakkekotta and leading to Andhakarathode, has been completely encroached and is no longer functional, resulting in widespread waterlogging," he said.

The association recommended mapping the entire drainage system and undertaking scientific renovation to connect the network with surrounding rivers, which are currently underutilised.

Trura also raised concerns about stray dog menace, noting that despite the municipality's ABC centres, difficulties in sterilising stray dogs continue to create problems for residents.
