India is a cricket-loving nation and has the world’s highest cricket ground at Chail in Himachal Pradesh. The ground was built by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala in 1893 and is situated at an altitude of 2,444 metres. It offers stunning views of the Himalayas.
Chess is believed to have originated from an ancient Indian game called Chaturanga, which means four divisions. The game was popular in India during the Gupta Empire in the 6th century. From India, the game spread to Arabia and then to Europe.
Yoga is an ancient practice of physical, mental and spiritual disciplines that originated in India. Yoga is mentioned in the Vedas and the Upanishads, the oldest scriptures of Hinduism. Lord Shiva is considered the first yogi or Adiyogi in Hindu mythology.
India has the largest population of tigers in the world, accounting for about 75% of the global count. According to the 2022 tiger census report, India had 3,167 tigers, more than double the number in 2006. India also has many tiger reserves and sanctuaries.
Kumbh Mela is one of the most celebrated religious festivals in India. It is held every 12 years at four locations along the holy rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Godavari. Kumbh Mela attracts millions of pilgrims who take a dip in the river to wash away their sins.
India has a rich heritage of historic monuments that reflect its culture and history. India has 40 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Taj Mahal, the Red Fort, Hampi, Khajuraho and more. India also has many temples, forts, palaces and mosques that are worth visiting.
