According to Bloomberg, sources familiar with the company's plans have indicated that this new option may primarily target audiences in Europe and Asia. While it's currently unclear if this tier will be available in India, the possibility exists. Should it be launched in India, users would gain free access to Netflix content with the inclusion of advertisements .

The report indicates that Netflix is in the early stages of discussing this potential move. In the past, Netflix experimented with a free service in Kenya, which provided a limited selection of content, though this initiative was eventually discontinued. The proposed free tier is expected to offer a similar model, focusing on curated and restricted libraries in established markets such as Japan and Germany, rather than emerging ones.

This potential shift comes as Netflix contends with an increasingly competitive streaming landscape . In recent years, the company has faced significant challenges from competitors like Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, and HBO Max. To maintain its market position, Netflix has implemented several changes, including cracking down on password sharing and increasing subscription prices. In 2022, the introduction of an ad-supported tier was another strategic move to attract budget-conscious customers and tap into advertising revenue.

Despite these efforts, Netflix's subscriber growth has plateaued in some mature markets. Exploring a free ad-supported plan could attract viewers who are reluctant to pay for a subscription while generating additional revenue through advertisements. However, it is reported that Netflix does not plan to launch this free option in the US, where its current models are already near full saturation.

Although Netflix has yet to make any official announcements, the potential launch of a free, ad-supported tier in India could attract a significant number of users due to its no-cost nature. Other platforms like Disney+ Hotstar and Zee5 already offer free content to users supported by ads. It's worth noting that Netflix currently offers some of the lowest-priced plans in India, starting at Rs 149 for the basic mobile plan and going up to Rs 649 for the premium monthly subscription.
