In an era where international travel has become increasingly common for purposes such as education, pilgrimage, tourism, business, medical attendance, and family visits, possessing a valid passport is a prerequisite. Recognising the surge in foreign travel from India, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) introduced the Passport Seva Project (PSP) in May 2010 to streamline passport-related services.

The Passport Seva initiative has successfully simplified the application and issuance processes, making it convenient for individuals to obtain this crucial travel document. If you are gearing up for an overseas journey and need to apply for a passport, the following step-by-step guide on how to file your application online will prove invaluable.

Step-by-Step Guide to Applying for Passport Online:

Visit the Passport Seva Online Portal :
Head to passportindia.gov.in, the official Passport Seva Online Portal.


Register on the Portal:
Click on the "Register Now" link on the home screen to create an account.

Login to the Portal:
After registration, log in to the Passport Seva Online Portal using the provided Login ID.

Initiate Passport Application:
Click on the "Apply" button to commence the application process for a Fresh Passport or Re-issue of Passport.

Complete Application Form:
Fill in all the necessary details in the form and submit it online.

View Saved/Submitted Applications:
Access the option for "View Saved/Submitted Applications."

Pay and Schedule Appointment:
Click on the "Pay and Schedule Appointment" link to make the mandatory payment for the services. Note that online payment is now compulsory for booking appointments at all Passport Seva Kendras (PSK), Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSK), and Passport Offices (PO). The regular application fee is Rs 1,500, while the Tatkal passport application fee is Rs 2,000.


Print Application Receipt:
After completing the payment via net banking or another available option, click on the "Print Application Receipt" link to obtain your transaction receipt.

Receive Appointment Details:
Expect to receive an SMS containing appointment details after successfully filing your application. This message serves as proof during your visit to the Passport Office.

Visit Passport Seva Kendra/Regional Passport Office:
On the appointed date, visit the designated Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Regional Passport Office ( RPO ) with all the original documents you submitted during the application process.
