Threads, a new text-based conversation app by Meta, is being positioned as a formidable competitor to Twitter. Threads operates under the same content rules as Instagram and provides similar controls for muting and blocking accounts.

Threads has a 500-character count limit, while unverified Twitter users have a maximum of 280 characters.

Verified Instagram accounts can keep their blue badge on Threads, unlike on Twitter where it requires a paid subscription for every user.

Threads requires users to have an Instagram account, allowing them to import bio information and followers. Twitter has no such compulsions yet.

Videos up to five minutes long can be posted on Threads, compared to two minutes and 20 seconds on Twitter for non-verified users.

The threading experience on Threads requires hitting enter three times, while on Twitter, it can be done with a click on the plus button. Users can share their Threads post on their Instagram Stories or on any other platform as a link.

For now, the Threads app has launched without ads to generate excitement among users. It promises an engaging, hassle-free and ad-free experience to its users.

The app is built on the ActivityPub social-networking protocol, enabling users to interact with a community beyond Instagram. Users can choose to follow the same accounts they follow on Instagram or search for users and follow them manually.
