Bihar election result: JDU camp certain of Nitish Kumar's 10th term as Bihar CM

Patna: Even as the JDU camp looks confident of Nitish Kumar's 10th term as Bihar CM, the future role of NDA's other allies - BJP, LJP(RV), HAM and RLM - in the smooth functioning of the next state government will be politically significant.

Since the Nitish factor has worked successfully in this 2025 assembly election like the past, all eyes would be on how the political equations among the NDA allies, particularly BJP and JDU, play out in the state government formation. The common factor among the NDA's five allies is that all have displayed a good strike-rate in the elections.

While for the first time BJP has emerged as the single-largest party in the state, poll results show that the Nitish Kumar-headed JDU is still a formidable political force in the state.

"During campaigning across the state, all top NDA leaders declared that this election is being fought under the leadership of CM Nitish Kumar. They kept on reiterating that there is no vacancy for the CM's post. So, there should not be any doubt over Nitish Kumar's 10th term as chief minister," JDU spokesperson Neeraj Kumar told ET.

Jagnarayan Yadav, a member of JDU's national executive, said the next government would be formed under Kumar's leadership. "All alliance partners would be given berths in the ministry based on their strength and capacity," Yadav said. According to him, JDU's top leaders are reaching Patna to discuss the next course of action.

Sources in JDU said the party would tread cautiously in the new political situation which has emerged after the poll results. "Nitish Kumar has his own style of functioning in matters of governance. In the past, he never allowed anyone to intervene in administrative matters. I hope he will show the same tendency in future also," a senior JDU leader said.

A section of JDU leaders also highlights JDU's full backing to the central government as an important ally of NDA. "BJP and JDU are now dependent on each other in the state as well as at the Centre. This is a good sign. Nitish enjoys respect in the NDA camp. NDA's four other allies have realised the importance of JDU's presence in NDA," a source in the JDU camp said.

The poll results show that Kumar continues to remain a brand unmatched by any politician in Bihar. At the ground level, Kumar is popular as a leader who fulfils all his poll promises. This was perhaps one major factor that there were few takers of the Mahagathbandhan's poll promise regarding a government job to every family in the state.

Although Mahagathbandhan's chief ministerial candidate continued to target Kumar's health condition during his election campaign, the CM drew an impressive crowd at his all-public meetings. There were visibly high numbers of women voters there. The respect which Kumar enjoys among voters is political capital for the NDA.
