The inspiration behind Barbie came from the German Bild Lilli doll, based on a cartoon character known for her flirtatious and daring personality. Originally intended as a gag gift for adults, the doll quickly became popular with children.

Barbie was first introduced to the world on March 9, 1959, at the American International Toy Fair in New York City. She was created by Ruth Handler, the co-founder of Mattel (American toy company), and named after her daughter, Barbara (Barbara Millicent Roberts).

Greiner and Hausser, the makers of the original Lilli doll, sued Mattel for copyright infringement in 1961. Two years later the case was settled out of court, and in 1964 Mattel acquired the patents and copyright for the doll and has been holding it for almost 60 years now.

The original Barbie doll featured a signature look, which included a black-and-white striped swimsuit, high heels, and a ponytail. This iconic appearance has evolved over the years, but Barbie's ponytail remains one of her defining features.

The most expensive Barbie ever sold at auction was a one-of-a-kind Barbie designed by Australian jewelry designer Stefano Canturi, which sold for a staggering $302,500. All proceeds from the 2010 sale went to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Manhattan.
