Ernakulam: Brawl over a bottle of liquor led to muder, say cops

Kochi: A day after a 48-year-old man was found dead on the terrace of his neighbour P Sajeevan’s house at Pothanikkad in Kothamangalam on Saturday morning, police found that Prasad Kuzhippilli was murdered by Sajeevan in a drunken brawl.

According to Pothanikkad police, on Friday night, the fight between the duo occurred around 11.30pm, who together consumed one bottle of liquor, over a second bottle of alcohol they bought.

When Prasad refused to share it with Sajeevan, out of the anger he allegedly thrashed Prasad’s chest and hit his head with his air pistol inflicting fatal injuries on him.

The arrest of Sajeevan (41) of Pulinthanam at Pothanikkad was recorded on Sunday. A murder case has been registered against him under Section 302 of IPC and he will be produced in the court on Monday. Prasad’s body has been released to relatives after postmortem on Sunday.

According to police, Prasad was a worker at Sajeevan’s poultry farm and they often consumed alcohol together at the latter’s house. On Friday night, they consumed one bottle of alcohol at a shed behind Sajeevan’s house. Later they opened another bottle but consumed only very little as they were scheduled to go to Rajakkad in Idukki along with another person on Saturday morning. Prasad took the bottle and left to his house which is nearby and Sajeevan went to sleep.

“But later in the night Sajeevan woke up after hearing some noise on the terrace. When he went up there he saw Prasad who said that he would sleep on the terrace as he could not go home in an inebriated state. Agreeing with him, Sajeevan said he wanted to drink more and asked Prasad to take the bottle of alcohol he took with him. But he refused to share and this led to a fight between them following which Sajeevan killed Prasad,” said Pothanikkad circle inspector G Suresh Kumar.

Police said Sajeevan did not know that Prasad was dead until Saturday morning when he came to the terrace to wake him up so that they could go to Rajakkad.

“Prasad collapsed on the floor after being hit by the rifle around five times, and Sajeevan thought that it was the effect of alcohol. He later went back to sleep. Later around 5.30am, the third person came to Sajeevan’s house as prescheduled. They together went to the terrace to wake Prasad up and found him lying in a pool of blood,” Kumar added.
