Ex-bureaucrats, doctors to lock horns in Hoshiarpur

HOSHIARPUR: It will be a fight of former bureaucrats and doctors in Hoshiarpur parliamentary constituency. While BJP and BSP candidates are former bureaucrats, Congress and AAP nominees are specialist doctors.

Congress candidate Dr Raj Kumar, siting MLA from Chabbewal, is MD (radio-diagnosis) and has his scanning centres in Hoshiarpur and a few other places.

AAP candidate Dr Ravjot Singh is MD (medicine) and is also one of the busy medicine specialists in the town. The waiting hall outside his OPD is always brimming with patients.

Both of them got into politics after achieving success in their profession.

BJP candidate Som Parkash is a sitting MLA from Phagwara . He is a former IAS officer who had deployed as deputy commissioner in Hoshiarpur. He had joined Punjab government as the excise and taxation officer in 1979. After serving the department for close to 15 years, he was directly elevated to the IAS and was given key posts.

BSP candidate Khushi Ram also retired as an IAS officer. He had served as SDM in Phagwara and Dasuya towns when he was a PCS officer. His growth trajectory in government service appears even more surprising and has few parallels. He had started as a clerk in Punjab government and then got appointed as a naib tehsildar . While serving as tehslidar for some years, he got into PCS and then got finally promoted to IAS.

Meanwhile, all the four belong to Ravidassia/Adi-dharmi caste.
