Farmer sets himself afire in Damoh, dies

Bhopal: A deb-ridden farmer allegedly committed suicide in Damoh.

Police said that Birju Patel, a resident of Panji village in Hata tehsil, was under pressure to repay the loan he had taken from private money lenders. He sustained critical burns after he allegedly poured kerosene on himself and set himself afire on Tuesday.

He was rushed to district hospital in Damoh where he succumbed on Thursday.

Vijay Mishra, SHO of Hata police station said, “A case has been registered and investigations are on.” He told the local media that everything related to debt and allegations against money lenders will be investigated.

Villagers alleged that money lenders had grabbed his land after he allegedly failed to repay the loan.
