Fatehpur (UP) Election 2019: BJP MP Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti looks to retain the seat for the second time

The Fatehpur Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 14 parliamentary constituencies in Uttar Pradesh that goes to polls in the fifth phase of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections on May 6. The current sitting Member of Parliament (MP) is Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Jyoti is in the fray once again and she is pitted against Sukhdev Prasad Verma of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Rakesh Sachan of the Congress and Mahesh Chandra Sahu of the Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party (Lohiya).

The constituency comprises of five Legislative Assembly segments and consists of 1,536,621 number of electorates in totality out of these 844,959 are males and 691,662 are females. The city of Fatehpur lies between Ganges and Yamuna rivers.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Niranjan Jyoti had won the contest by a margin of over 1.87 lakh votes. She received a total of 4.85 lakh votes at 45.97 per cent vote share while BSP's Afzal Siddiqui stood at the second spot with 2.98 lakh vote sat 28.26 per cent vote share. Rakesh Sachan came at the third spot with 1.79 lakh votes to his name.

In the 2009 elections, Rakesh Sachan was elected MP after securing 2.18 lakh votes at 31.53 per cent vote share while BSP runner up Mahendra Prasad Nishad could manage 1.66 lakh votes at 24.01 per cent vote share. In 2004, Mahendra Nishad had won from the seat after pipping Achal Singh of the SP in a narrow contest.
