Felling of trees in Nanjangud raises residents' hackles

MYSURU: A section of residents raised a furore over the indiscriminate felling of massive trees near the iconic Sri Srikanteshwara temple . Concerned over the loss of green cover, the residents on Friday reported the problem to the tahsildar.

Residents alleged that trees near the temple were being cut without the consent of the forest department, and questioned why the whole exercise was undertaken under the cover of night, making it very suspicious.

However, officials in the taluk administration said that due process had been followed before the trees were felled. Nanjangud taluk tahsildar Mahesh Kumar said that, on being informed about the incident, he asked the forest department, officials of which informed him that permission had been granted for felling of the trees.

Range forest officer Lokesh told TOI that the stretch of the state highway near the temple that leads to the national highway at Badanavalu was being widened. “The authorities overseeing the road-widening project approached the forest department seeking permission to fell trees at different locations for which we granted permission. Around 50 trees will be felled to widen the road,” he said.
