Flood situation grim in Jorhat, 10,000 affected

JORHAT: The flood situation in Jorhat district still remains grim with the Brahmaputra and its tributaries still flowing above the danger level for the third consecutive day on Thursday.

An official of Jorhat district administration said, "About 10,000 people across more than 20 villages in Jorhat West and Teok revenue circles have been affected by the floods.

Over 1,000 affected people have taken shelter at relief camps. District administration officials are providing relief materials to the flood victims regularly."

He added, "Several areas across the Jorhat west revenue circle have been waterlogged after the Bhogdoi river dyke was breached. As a result, large areas of croplands and human habitations have been inundated."

About 60,000 people across more than 80 villages under Teok, Jorhat East and Jorhat West revenue circles were affected by the floods earlier in July this year.

The flood waters claimed the lives of three persons, including two children, in the district.

Meanwhile, the water resources department has taken steps to repair the breached part of the Bhogdoi river dyke. They have put up porcupines and Geo bags at the breached part of the dyke.

State water resources minister Keshab Mahanta also visited the place on August 10. During his visit, Mahanta said that the government has taken up a project worth Rs 4.95 crore to repair the embankment and work will start soon. He added another project worth Rs 80 lakh has been launched in the same area as a temporary measure to protect the people from flood and erosion.
