Floods in Krishna: People moved to safe places in Krishna, Guntur districts

Amaravati (Andhra Pradesh): People in several villages in Krishna and Guntur districts have been moved to safer places, as floods in river Krishna continued for the fourth consecutive day. Water started entering the villages, inundating fields and low lying areas. Temple town Amaravati, Dharanikota and Pedda Madduru villages were cut off from the other parts of Guntur district.

Several villages in Diviseema region in Krishna district were also badly affected.

Prakasam barrage that connects Vijayawada and Guntur is brimming at 15 feet high with close to 7 lakh cusecs arriving from the upper stream. Second danger signal was hoisted.

The barrage was closed for four wheelers. Only bikes are allowed to ply.

Water touched the steps to the house of Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu at Vundavalli on the banks of the river. Naidu and his family members are away in Hyderabad.

Officials opened all the 70 gates to discharge close to 5.5 lakh cusecs into the sea. A total of 90 TMC water has been released into the sea from Prakasam barrage since Monday.

Nagaraju Sagar in the upper stream is getting 7.3 lakh cusecs of inflows and is discharging 6.99 lakh cusecs .

Srisailam reservoir is receiving 8.32 lakh cusecs and is discharging 8.58 lakh cusecs . The reservoir is maintaining 881.40 feet as against its full reservoir level of 885 ft.
Pulichintala reservoir is maintaining almost equal amount of 7.5 lakh cusecs arrival and discharge.

Traffic on national highway affected

Traffic on Kolkata - Chennai national highway was very badly affected due to the regulation of vehicles movement on Kanaka Durga Varadhi, the bridge parallel to Prakasam barrage on river Krishna.

Water is flowing on the road at Kanchikacherla and Chandarlapadu on Kolkata - Hyderabad national highway. Pavitra Sangamam at Ibrahimpatnam is receiving huge inflows. Officials see the possibility of highway inundation.

Water entered colonies in Krishna Lanka in Vijayawada. People said they experienced floods of this level in Krishna ten years ago in 2009, preceded by once in 2001.

Standing crops in thousands of acres were damaged and still lie submerged. Many villages in Diviseema region were marooned.

Floods to river Godavari are also continuing, leaving many hamlets in Devipatnam block of East Godavari district cut off from the other parts of the district.

Boat capsizes in Pulicot lake: All 40 passengers safe

Meanwhile, a boat carrying 40 passengers capsized in Pulicot lake in Nellore district. The alert crew members got other boats to rescue the passengers. All the 40 passengers were brought to the shore safely.

The passengers were on their way from Irakam Deevi to Tadaka.
