Forest officials rescue wolf from well in Khed village

Pimpri Chinchwad: The forest department has rescued a wolf that fell into a well in a village in Khed taluka under the Rajgurunagar range of the Pune forest division.

The incident happened at Akharwadi village, around 5km from Chakan, on Monday morning. This was the third such instance of a wolf being rescued in the past six months.

Rajgurunagar range round officer Ramdas Gokule said, “The wolf fell into the open well in the field of the Muluk family in Akharwadi on Sunday evening. The animal was rescued and released into the wild on Monday morning.”

He added, “The well had no rock on its edge for the wolf to rest. If we had not rescued the wolf in time, the animal would have drowned after swimming for long to stay afloat.”

Akharwadi is located downstream of Chaskaman dam on the Bhima river, around 20km from Rajgurunagar. Bhima river flows through the middle of the village. Wolves often come out at night in search of prey. Most of the farmers have wells on their fields without any barricade. Forest officials said wild animals such as wolves and leopards often fall in these wells while chasing their prey.

Earlier this year, a wolf was rescued from a well in Varchi Bhamburdi village. Three months ago another wolf had fallen into a well of a farmer in Varude Vabgaon village, the officials said.
