Rajkot: A fraudster was arrested from Junagadh Road in Dhoraji of Rajkot district on Thursday.
The accused was identified as Nimish Purohit (49), a resident of Nagrik Bank Society in Junagadh.
According to police, Purohit’s modus operandi was to cultivate acquaintance with rich senior citizens as their distant relative after gathering their background information.
Then, he would ask the victims to show them their gold jewellery, telling them that he wanted to make the same kind of jewellery for himself and that he would return them after showing it to the goldsmith. After taking the jewellery, he would disappear.
“During interrogation, Purohit confessed to having committed 27 similar frauds in Dhoraji, Upleta, Jetpur and Gondal of Rajkot district, Rajkot city, Gir-Somnath district, Junagadh district, Jamnagar district and Porbandar district. We have recovered jewellery worth Rs 8.5 lakh from him. Purohit had deposited jewellery worth Rs 9.45 lakh in Muthoot Finance and taken loan against it,” said M N Rana, inspector of Rajkot rural local crime branch.
