Friday's rain leads to long power outages across city

Gurgaon: While the brief downpour on Friday brought the much-needed relief from the heat wave that scorched the region, it also bought along the prolonged, painful power cuts .

Residents of DLF 1 , 2 and 3, Sushant Lok , Sector 23, Sector 27, and Sector 46 complained of power outages that lasted close to seven hours, and voltage fluctuations on Friday.

The situation didn't improve on Saturday either.

Heavy winds and rain led to a breakdown of power infrastructure at several places, and took hours for Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam ( DHBVN ) to fix.

“Outages have gone up in the past two weeks and on an average, we live seven to ten hours without electricity. Yesterday, around 4pm, the moment it started to rain, power went off. Moments later, there was a major sparking from the transformer . We apprised the DHBVN officials immediately but power supply was restored only around midnight. Today, too, the situation is similar,” said Ishaan Kumar, a resident of Saraswati Kunj in sector 53.

A senior DHBVN official said that many of the power lines were damaged on Friday evening. “Strong winds disrupted power supply in most of the overhead lines. At several areas, poles got damaged as well. We are working round the clock to fix this,” he said.

The city dwellers are not new to the pangs of unreliable electricity supply. Locked in due to the pandemic has made the unscheduled long power cuts and voltage fluctuations especially unbearable.

“Earlier, we would book a hotel room or stay back in our offices. But we don’t have that option any longer. For those working fom home like me, the disruption is very frustrating,” complained Neha Singh, a resident of Sector 30.

The DHBVN official however, claimed that the department is conducting repairs at many areas that have led to power cuts this season. The department argues that there is no shortage of power supply in the city, and the current disruption is caused by natural calamities or a sharp rise in demand, putting strain on the infrastructure.
