From next academic year, Imphal Sainik School to enrol girls

IMPHAL: Sainik School Imphal ( SSI ) will be admitting girls from the next academic session as per the directives of the Union defence ministry, its principal Gp Capt HCS Chauhan said.

Chauhan also apprised the school’s ongoing infrastructural development and other requirements to education minister Thokchom Radheshyam Singh when the latter visited the campus at the Pangei area in Imphal East on Friday.

During a meeting at the school premises, Chauhan highlighted the need for a separate dormitory for girls, which is not available at the moment.

Stating that the National Defence Academy (NDA), too, is preparing to induct girls and groom them for the three wings of the country’s defence services, the minister said Manipur should not lag behind in providing opportunities to girls to be part of the defence services. Radheshyam assured that all possible assistance will be extended to the school.

Congratulating the cadets who have already cleared the written examinations and are awaiting medical tests, Radheshyam said the government will look in the areas of possibilities for scholarships for cadets in the NDA. He emphasized that the sole purpose of the Sainik schools is to groom the young minds to build a strong nation.
