Gandhinagar junked dumpsite after protests

Gandhinagar: The municipal corporation of the state capital, Gandhinagar, does not have a designated dumpsite. A site in Sector 30 near a crematorium is being used illegally by the corporation to dump waste. The corporation was given a site near Pethapur village, but protests from residents of the area forced the government to junk the site.
A nagarpalika official said that the residents were incensed because the proposed site was near a temple. The government is now eyeing a site near Lodhara.

Gandhinagar generates 70 metric tonnes of waste daily. Gandhinagar municipal commissioner Dr Ratankanvar Gadhavicharan said: “We are at present dumping waste at Sector 30. The corporation has been promised land near Pethapur, but we are yet to get its possession.”

A senior officer said that the GMC has begun processing garbage, but the efforts aren’t enough. Garbage is still piling up at Pirana, he said. The officer said that garbage at Sector 30 has rendered a water supply well useless. He said that though Pethapur residents opposed the move to create a dumpsite, they are themselves dumping waste all around them.

Other officials said that they will study the Ahmedabad garbage disposal model so that it can be replicated in Gandhinagar. But that can work only if the GMC gets a landfill site.

Debris downpour in posh precint

An open plot near Star Bazaar, where construction debris is dumped, has turned into an eyesore in the posh locality. The residents complain that private contractors are dumping debris and construction waste in the area. Some people have started dumping domestic waste in and around the plot. A security guard of one of the housing societies in the area said: “We have been asked by residents to prevent the dumping of construction debris. However, domestic waste is strewn all over.”

A chairman of a housing society said: “The site is full of rats. We are told is that the site is privately owned and the AMC cannot clean it.”
