Gauhati high court notice to government, CBI and NHAI in highway project scam

GUWAHATI: In response to a PIL seeking a CBI investigation into an alleged Rs 300-crore scam involving top government officials in connection with providing compensation to people for a highway-widening project in Sivasagar district, the Gauhati high court has issued notices to the state government, CBI and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), directing them to file their replies.

In 2017, following allegations of a scam in the project, the state government had ordered a CID probe into the matter. It was alleged that government officials have allegedly siphoned off around Rs 300 crore meant for compensation to be given to people whose land and other properties were acquired for widening the NH-37 from Jhanji to Demow in Sivasagar district from 2008-2014.

Petitioners Lohit Prakash Dutta and Harsh Dhanuka, both lawyers from Sivasagar, said, "Only the CBI can reveal the truth behind the massive corruption and misappropriation of public money as several top civil servants are possibly involved in the scam."
