Geology dept begins study of landslides in Idukki dist

Idukki: Five members of Geology department have begun inspection of the landslides and mudslides that occurred in Idukki . Hydrogeologist Dr V B Vinayan and soil conservation officer M J Prasanth led the five member team inspecting landslip reported areas, said officials.

On Thursday the team began the inspection at Devikulam thaluk.

The team inspected the structure of the soil, slope of the topography, water supply in the region and characteristics of rocks.

“The Devikulam taluk increasingly witnessing soil piping and the possibilities of landslip on the rocky hills are more higher. The underground water flow of the Munnar region caused to soil piping.” said geologist V B Vinayan.

The team inspected 19 spots under Devikulam thaluk where landslide and mudslide occurred. The spots included Photo Point in Munnar, PHC road, Munnar-Chinnakanal road, Kanthiyapara, Aram mile, Randam mile, Ancham mile, Mankulam, Parakudy and Nallathanni road. A team of scientists also inspected the areas in Kattappana where landslides and soil piping were reported. In Thodupuzha taluk the team consisting geologist Merin Mariya Joy and soil conservation officer Jaison Joseph inspected Velliyamattom, Arakkulam and Kudayathoor areas. The team on Friday inspected the areas of Idukki taluk. The team inspected the landslide regions in Periyarvalley, Chelachuvad, Churuli and Keerithode in Idukki thaluk. The team also inspected the crack formed over twenty homes in Chelachuvad Cutting, Churuli, Kathippara and Attikkulam areas. The team was directed to State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) and the inspections will be completed within one week and a report will be submitted to the District Disaster Management Authority(DDMA), said officials.

However district geologist B Ajayakumar led team on Friday inspected the cavity formed on the top of a hill at Mullamthandu near Poopara in Idukki. Officials found that the cavity occurred due to soil piping. “A soil piping was formed in the region due to the extremely heavy rainfall” said a geology department official.

Meanwhile officials banned traffic on Periyavara Bridge in Munnar- Marayoor stretch due to the repairing works of the temporary bridge. On Tuesday a mudslide occurred in the occurred in the newly repaired Periavara Bridge and the officials banned the heavy vehicle traffic.
