Girlfriend, her kin thrash boy for recording TikTok videos with her in Karnataka's Yadgir district

Bengaluru: The newest social media platform to have captured the imagination of young Indians, TikTok, has led to yet another violent incident. This time, in the state of Karnataka where a boy was thrashed by his girlfriend and her family members for allegedly recording a TikTok video with her. The shocking instance has been reported from the state's Yadgir district.

The matter came to light after a video of Haligera village resident Buggappa tied to a tree and being thrashed by a group of people went into wide circulation among local social media users. One of the people beating the boy is his girlfriend who can be seen repeatedly slapping him with her sandals even as Buggappa's mother makes continuous efforts to rescue her son from the mob.

Locals later rushed him to a nearby hospital where he is currently undergoing treatment. As per the most recent inputs, no case has been registered with the police in this regard as of yet. However, the case sheds light on how social media platforms and mobile applications have changed the social dynamic not just in urban but also in rural areas.

It was later revealed that Buggappa had recorded and stored several TikTok videos on his cell phone. He posted one such video also featuring his girlfriend on his social media profile which is where the girl's family members must have sent it first.

This is not the first time TikTok has led to a violent incident. A similar case was reported from Mumbai in July of this year where a couple was assaulted in Thane area allegedly for asking their neighbour about a video she made for the mobile application. The girl and her brother reportedly made their way to the victim's home and physically assaulted him after hurling abusive words at him and his wife. The brother even hit him with a stone.

Other issues which have plagued the application are the deaths of users such as one which was reported in June of this year. A 12-year-old boy died after he accidentally choked himself to death. At the time of his untimely demise, the child was trying to shoot and upload a TikTok video. Makers of the application have responded to bans and allegations by claiming that measures have been taken by them to ensure that no untoward incident takes place during the shooting of videos for the mobile app
