Girls outnumber boys in medal tally

DARBHANGA: Governor-cum-Chancellor Fagu Chauhan emphasised on bringing the deprived and marginalised section to the mainstream of the society and help them to participate in the development process.

Addressing the 10th convocation ceremony of Darbhanga-based Lalit Narayan Mithila University (LNMU) on Tuesday, the chancellor said, “Education is not only essential for procuring a lucrative job but also for development of morality in human beings.

The need of the hour is to bring the deprived sections of the society to the mainstream.”

“Bihar has a rich educational history as some of the oldest universities in the world including Nalanda and Vikramshila Universities were founded in this state. This heritage has to be taken ahead,” the governor said.

He also made a fervent appeal to the students and the university administration to conserve and protect the environment. “Pollution is the biggest challenge for mankind and cutting of trees is one of the important reasons behind it. We should take a solemn vow to keep the varsity campus green,” Chauhan said.

He added, “Colleges and universities should have a strong bonding with the society and each college should adopt a village.”

As many as 25 toppers of different postgraduate subjects received the gold medals at an impressive function held on the varsity premises. The girls outnumbered the boys in the medal tally.

Presenting the annual report, LNMU vice-chancellor S K Singh said, “A large number of assistant professors in different subjects, on the recommendation of Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) and 540 guest teachers have been appointed in the university. Students of postgraduate batch 2017-19 were awarded degrees in this convocation. The distance education wing of this university has contributed a lot in increasing the gross enrolment ratio. Presently 80,000 students are enrolled under the distance education system.”

Around 1,520 plant saplings have been planted on the university campus, added the VC.

Padm Shri V S Chauhan, executive chairman, National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), while delivering convocation address as chief speaker stressed on honesty and integrity among youths.
