Gujarat: Master Sanskrit shlokas in 30 hours!

RAJKOT: For those wanting to learn Sanskrit, but don’t have time for attending formal classes, the Somnath Sanskrit University in Veraval town of Gir Somnath district has come up with option of online courses.


This is part of an experiment by the state’s first Sanskrit university to reach out to enthusiasts within the country and across the globe, wanting to learn the ancient language.

The online courses will be limited to 20-30 hour duration with participants getting a completion certificate once the finish it.

“Globally there are many people who want to learn to read and write Sanskrit. For such people who are interested in Sanskrit we are planning some short term courses,” vice chancellor of the varsity Gopbandhu Mishra told TOI.

“People need guidance on how to pronounce Sanskrit words and how to follow Sanskrit dictionary and other elements of the language like Kavya, Anaknar, Yogsutra. This aspects will be covered in the online courses,” added Mishra.

This is an attempt to make short and easily understandable courses for those wanting to learn Sanskrit and that too in easy and fun way, he added.

The varsity will begin with course Katham Padhem, meaning how to read. This basic course will teach a person how to read the language. This will be followed by advanced courses on holy scripture Bhagvadgita and Solasya Sanskar. Mishra said that framework for Katham Padhem was ready while work was in process for the two other courses.

He further said that the fee structure of these courses was yet to be decided. “However, for completion of this course the students will have to clear an online exam and based on that they will be given certificate of participation,” Mishra added.

The courses that is being designed using audio-video tutorials will also allow the student to interact with a resource person from the university to clear doubts.

One of the resources persons for the course assistant professor Dipesh Katira said, “There are grammar books in Sanskrit which are to be read in different way. There is a method to read the ‘Purana Sahitya’ (ancient literature). This will be done for six different branches of Sanskrit during a 30 hour course.”
