Gujarat touches new high with 675 cases

Ahmedabad regains lead with 215 cases, Surat second place with 201cases

After a day’s break when Covid cases went down slightly, Gujarat reported the highest number of coronavirus cases with 675 positive cases declared on Wednesday. The state earlier reported 620 cases on June 30, 626 cases on June 29, 624 on June 28 and on June 27, 615 cases were reported.

The total number of cases in the state touched 33,318 on Wednesday. Ahmedabad again regained the lead back from Surat, reporting 215 cases. The city reported 208 cases, with 7 cases in rural. In comparison, Surat reported 201cases, with 180 declared positive from the city, while 21 were from the rest of the district.

Vadodara reported 57 cases, Navsari had 24 cases, 18 in Jamnagar, 15 each in Bharuch, Rajkot and Valsad, 12 each in Banaskantha and Surendranagar and 10 cases were reported from Mehsana. Other districts reported cases in single digits.

The state reported 21more deaths due to Covid-19, of which 8 were in Ahmedabad city, 5 in Surat (city 4, rural 1), 1each in Rajkot city, Bharuch, Aravalli, Banaskantha, Kheda, Amreli, Dahod and Chotta Udepur. This took the death toll to 1,869 till date.

A total of 368 patients were discharged from hospitals on Wednesday, taking the total number of discharged patients to 24,038 till July 1. Meanwhile, an office assistant in Chh branch of Social Justice department in the State secretariat tested positive for Covid. Three of her colleagues have been asked to stay under self-quarantine till July 8.

Herd immunity ?

Even as cases rise across Gujarat, especially in Surat, Ahmedabad is seeing a reduction in severe cases being reported at hospitals, especially the 1,200-bed Covid-19 facility.

Dr M M Prabhakar, OSD of Medicity, said this could be attributed to the decrease in virulence of the coronavirus in the city or immunity was developing in areas where Covid-19 was rampant earlier, in the central zone.

He said that while the hospital used to be filled earlier, there are now just 247 patients admitted there and most cases were from newer zones in the city.
