GUWAHATI: Twelve people, including the main accused, have been arrested in Hojai district in central Assam in connection with an alleged case of "love jihad" where a Muslim man eloped with a Hindu minor girl, by concealing his identity.

The protests erupted over allegations of a Muslim youth "luring" a minor Hindu girl and eloping with her on November 14.

The accused, a resident of Ahmed Nagar in Hojai, allegedly introduced himself as a Hindu man.

On November 14 morning, the accused allegedly eloped with the girl. The girl's father had lodged a complaint with the same evening.

Ankur Jain, superintendent of police, Hojai, said, "Some people associated with the incident were apprehended on the same day. The main accused was apprehended and the minor girl was recovered today. Seven people have been arrested from Morigaon district and the rest were apprehended from Hojai on Monday and Tuesday."

Hindu Jagaran Mancha and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad had staged protests and threatened to hold state-level agitation if the girl and the culprit were not found.
