Happy b'day Tapi!

Surat: The birth anniversary of Tapi River was celebrated with fervour and joy at Navdi Ovara in Nanpura on Monday evening.

It is believed that river Tapi was born on Asadh Sud Satam (Seventh day of the Indian calendar month of Asadh) . It has been a tradition in Surat to celebrate the birth anniversary of Tapi river with the rituals of puja, archana and 108 metre long Chunri that is set afloat in the river as an offering .



A large number of people along with local officials and politicians gathered at Navdi Ovara to offer their prayers and performed Aarti on Monday evening. Akhil Bharitya Jin Mata Seva Sangh, Surat offered the traditional 108 metre long Chunri . The organization offers such Chunri’s at 10 different places which fall in the route of Tapi from its origin to end. Along with this, a 15-feet-high flag was also offered to Tapi.

Vaishnav Samprayday people performed Yagya at Navdi Ovara in the evening. They offered flag and performed Aarti . Though main functions were held in the evening, local population had been flocking the Navdi ovara since morning to pray and offer their puja to Tapi .

July is the month where in the past Tapi river used to have a lot of water flowing bank to bank. However, since the past two years, there is hardly any water in the river, which disappointed people. People had to pray and offer their puja on the bank of the river devoid of water.
