Hardeepak Nishad is Congress's Hamirpur pick

LUCKNOW: The Congress party on Sunday announced Hardeepak Nishad as its candidate for Hamirpur byelection due on September 23. The seat was vacated after BJP MLA Ashok Singh Chandel was convicted in a 22 year old murder case.

The announcement made by UPCC spokesperson Ashok Singh on Sunday makes the bypoll interesting with Congress also playing the OBC card after Samajwadi Party announced Manoj Kumar Prajapati, an OBC as its candidate from the seat.

BSP led by Mayawati has nominated Naushad Ali, a Muslim, as its candidate.

BJP, however, is yet to announce its candidate. The last date of filing of nominations for Hamirpur bypoll is September 4. The counting of votes and declaration of result is scheduled on November 27.

Bypolls are also due on 12 other assembly seats, since 11 sitting MLAs got elected to Lok Sabha in recent general elections and the Ghosi seat was vacated when MLA Phagu Chauhan was appointed as Bihar governor.

The Election Commission is yet to issue notification for the 12 seats.
