Haryan allows private cabs, autos, Gurgaon to decide next week

Gurgaon: The Haryana government has given the green light to private taxis, autos, e-rickshaws and maxi-cabs to ply in non-containment zones between 7am and 7pm. The Gurgaon administration, however, is expected to take a call on allowing public transport in the next 4-5 days.

The resumption of services comes with a few riders.
According to the government’s directives, only three persons will be allowed in private cabs, autos and e-rickshaws, including the driver. Maxi-cabs, which form a crucial mode of transport for office-goers in cities like Gurgaon, will be allowed to fill only 50% of their seats. Both passengers and drivers need to have the Aarogya Setu app in their phones.

As part of precautionary measures, drivers will have to ensure their vehicles are sanitised regularly, hand sanitisers are available with them and they wear masks all the time. Social distancing will have to be maintained in all auto and taxi stands. “We have devised a comprehensive list of guidelines that need to be followed before these services are allowed to resume. All deputy commissioners have been informed about these directives. They would issue appropriate instructions after evaluating the situation in their areas,” a transport department official said.

Although the state government has given the green signal, it is the local administration that will take the final call on resuming transport services after evaluating the situation in their areas. In case, the administration sees a spike in Covid cases, it can decide to not implement or shelve the services midway.

“All deputy commissioners have the liberty to evaluate the ground situation and then come out with their directives. Since we are faced with a dynamic situation, administrations can pull back these services midway if they think it’s necessary to arrest the spread of virus,” the transport official said.

Sources in the Gurgaon administration said a decision was expected in 4-5 days. The transport services mentioned by the government come under the regional transport authorities. It doesn’t include Gurugaman, the city bus service.
