Haryana: Investigations in 50% POSCO cases completed in Ambala

AMBALA: The Ambala district in Haryana has recorded on an average six cases every month of the child-rape incidents or sexual assaults and a total of 41 such cases have been registered, according to the data provided by the district police, in the first six months of the year 2019.

As per the guidelines of the government and the police headquarters, Ambala police have completed investigations in 50% of the cases registered under the Protection of the Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in the year 2019 up to June 30, senior officials told TOI

The Ambala district has 15 police stations under its jurisdiction. There are two women police stations - one Ambala City, which was established in 2015, and at Naraingarh, established in 2018.

“As per the data available, a total of 41 cases have been registered under the charges of POCSO Act in Ambala district. We have completed the investigations into 21 cases while the same are ongoing in the remaining 20 cases. All the accused involved in these 41 cases have been arrested and they are behind the bars,” said a senior police officer at Ambala Superintendent of Police (SP) office.

Shortage of lady sub-inspectors

As per sources and legal experts, the investigations of the POCSO cases are entitled to the sub-inspector level officers or above and these cases are mostly investigated by the lady officers. The shortage of lady sub-inspectors in Haryana police is also obstruction in quick investigations of the POCSO cases.

Lack of forensic laboratories

Sources said in the POCSO cases where the DNA or forensic reports are required, due to the higher waiting time at the laboratory in Madhuban of Karnal, the availability of reports is a time taking process.

Ambala Women SHO lady inspector Sunita said, “The cases which are false often take time duo to verification of the facts. The investigation officers must conduct a thorough investigation to ensure punishment to the guilty.”
