Haryana: UP man sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment till death for raping minor in Kurukshetra

KURUKSHETRA: The Kurukshetra district court of additional sessions judge (ASJ) Lal Chand in Haryana convicted and awarded rigorous life imprisonment to Vijay Kumar (in late 20s) of Saghanti village in Chandauli district of Uttar Pradesh (UP) for raping a minor girl.


Vijay has been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for life under Section 6 (punishment for aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and rigorous imprisonment for life till natural death under Section 376-AB (punishment for rape on woman under twelve years of age) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) with fines of Rs 10,000 and 15,000 respectively, said Kurukshetra deputy district attorney (DDA) Gopal Kumar.



In October 2018, a woman of Saghanti village in Chandauli district of UP had lodged a complaint with Shahabad police station of Kurukshetra district in this regard. The woman stated to the police, "I was living with my uncle’s son Vijay Kumar in Shahabad for around one month. On October 8, 2018, when I came home, Vijay was raping a 2.6 years old girl and after seeing me he fled the spot.”

A case under relevant sections of the POCSO Act and the IPC was registered at Shahabad police station.

On default of fine payment, the convict would have to undergo additional rigorous imprisonment for three months under Section 6 of POCSO and four months under Section 376-AB of the IPC.
