Hatred being spread systematically, says P Chidambaram

HYDERABAD: In an obvious reference to PM Narendra Modi’s style of functioning, former Union Minister P Chidambaram of the Congress on Tuesday sought to ask the people of India whether they wanted to be under the heels of one person.

“It is increasingly turning into the dictatorship of one person. However wise that person may be and whatever ideology he may be pursuing, do you want to be under the heels of one person?” Chidambaram said while addressing a sizeable audience at the launch of his book ‘Undaunted: Saving the Idea of India’ here at an event organised by Manthan, a forum for public discourse.

The book is a collection of his columns published in English and various other languages .

Stating that hatred is being spread systematically against what you eat, against intercaste and inter-religious marriages, or if you are cheering Pakistan in a cricket match, he said the time has come to ask what is happening to India, which is a multi-cultural and multireligious society wherein people once co-existed in harmony by bearing the burden and sharing the prosperity for over 3,000 years. “After five years of Modi government, the country is more divided than united. We are living in troubled times and most sections of society are living in fear as hatred is being spread with Dalits being stripped and people being chased to death for keeping cow meet in the house. The corrupt and the criminals should fear the law but they are fearing lawmakers. All the institutions set up to enforce law are being virtually destroyed. By weakening the institutions, we are weakening the Parliament and democracy ,” he said. On the economy front, he said that there has been a sharp decline in the economy.
