Heroic act of Rajouri doctor saves life of young housewife

A government doctor in far flung Khawas area of Rajouri district performed a heroic act in the intervening night of Monday - Tuesday and saved life of a young housewife amid heavy rainfall after which widespread appreciations have been received by the doctor with district magistrate Rajouri termed his act as a 'highly appreciable'.


Official sources said that in the late evening hours on Monday, amid heavy rainfall, a young pregnant housewife identified as 20 years old Zaida Akhter wife of Mohammad Mushtaq resident of far flung Badhal village started to suffer with pains in abdomen which increased further.


Sources added that at about 09:00 PM, an officer in district administration Rajouri received a distress call from a villager who informed officer that a pregnant woman is suffering with severe pains and there is no convenience with local population to shift the patient to hospital.


District administration directed chief medical officer Rajouri to arrange immediate shifting of patient from the village which falls under the jurisdiction of Kandi medical block but her shifting to community health centre Kandi was not possible due to dilapidated condition of road which got worst due to severe rains.


Chief medical officer Rajouri established contact with staff in primary health centre Khawas but it came to fore that lone driver of the hospital is stuck due to heavy rains and there was no additional driver available in hospital.


However, Dr. Atul Sharma posted under national health mission in PHC Khawas came up for the challenging task and himself drove the van-ambulance for over 12 kilometres amid heavy rains on worst road surface having severe slippery condition and managed to shift the patient to hospital.


" I received call from chief medical officer at 09:21 PM for shifting the patient but the lone driver was stuck in village due to rains so I decided to take up the challenging task myself." Dr. Atul Sharma said.


" I started to drive the mini-ambulance from Khawas hospital to Badhal village with the road of village is in worst state and heavy rainfall made it accident prone." said Dr. Atul who added that, "after driving ambulance in heavy rainfall for an hour, I reached in the village where village people brought the patient on road."


" I started return journey and cannot narrate how I drove ambulance on road which was not fit for vehicular movement due to heavy rains but somehow reached at PHC Khawas where patient was put to medical examination."


Dr. Atul Sharma further said that during examination it came to fore that pregnant lady is anaemic having poor blood haemoglobin count and is also having severe complication in position of baby inside womb while was heavily dehydrated while was also suffering from severe problem in urine passage.


" She was provided first aid in PHC Khawas and intra-venous fluid was imparted while a catheter was used for forceful urine passage and she started to become normal after an hour of first aid." Dr. Atul further said and added that only after rainfall came to an end, driver also reached back in hospital and patient was shifted to sub district hospital Sunderbani where she is under treatment.


When asked, Dr. Atul Sharma said, " As a doctor I can say that an hour long delay in her shifting will have resulted death of patient."


Chief medical officer Rajouri, Dr. Sunil Sharma said that Dr. Atul Sharma made entire doctor fraternity to feel proud on him.


" Doctor is next to God for a patient and Dr. Atul proved it and any delay in shifting of patient would have resulted death of pregnant lady." CMO Dr. Sunil Sharma further said.  


District magistrate Rajouri, Mohammad Aijaz Asad said that doctor in PHC Khawas made everyone feel proud.


" Such dedicated officials in government system are asset for us and heroic act of Dr. Atul Sharma will always be remembered."
