High court orders CBI probe into arrest of AP doctor

VIJAYAWADA: The AP high court on Friday ordered a CBI inquiry into the arrest of senior anesthetist, Dr Kolaventi Sudhakar , who was suspended by state government for voicing concern over alleged shortage of masks and PPE kits in Narsipatnam hospital in Visakhapatnam . He was posted there.

The HC also ordered the CBI to book all cops connected with his arrest and submit an interim report within eight weeks.

Sudhakar was arrested by Visakhapatnam police on May 16 on allegations of misbehaviour, obstructing cops and abusing the chief minister and the prime minister. Later, he was shifted to mental health facility stating that he is mentally unstable.

When coronavirus hit China I had warned that it will kill many people. No one listened to me. We had to wear mask for 15 days,” Sudhakar told media while he was being bundled in auto by police. He also attacked CM Jagan. Police said they had found Sudhakar allegedly in an inebriated condition on road. His hands were tied and he was dumped into a vehicle before being taken to police station. The anesthetist was half naked when he was arrested.

Earlier, the HC had directed that Sudhakar be produced before a magistrate and his statement recorded. The HC after examining Visakhapatnam district judge’s report, found many deviations from report submitted earlier by AP chief secretary and DGP, and medical certificate given by Visakhapatnam government hospital doctor.

The district judge in his report mentioned that there were six injuries on doctor’s body. The affidavit filed by chief secretary and DGP mentioned only one injury. The judge also attached photos with his report. “Do we have to consider that officials submitted a false affidavit? How did government doctor give a certificate stating there is only one injury?” the HC bench comprising Justice Rakesh Kumar and Justice K Suresh Reddy asked.

HC observed that videos submitted by officials seemed to be edited excerpts. The magistrate did not feel that Dr Sudhakar was mentally unstable whereas officials stated that he was shifted to mental hospital as he was not in sound mental condition. HC noted that Sudhakar was shifted to mental hospital after the issue was taken as suo motu petition.
