High quality fake Indian currency notes of Rs 1.9 lakh seized in Purnia, one held

PATNA: The sleuths of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested one person and seized Fake Indian Currency Notes of face value of Rs 1,90,500 at a bus stand in Purnia district on Monday night.

DRI sources said that the arrested FICN smuggler was identified as one Mumtaz Ahmed (39), a native of Sonth village under Harlakhi police station area in Madhubani district .

They said that altogether 95 pieces of FICN of face-value of Rs 2,000 and one of Rs 500, issued after demonetization, was seized from Ahmed’s possession.

“The FICN were of high quality. A common person won’t be able to differentiate them with original currency. The FICN were taken to bank officers for examination and even they could also figure out three differences from the actual one which were paper quality, barcode and water mark of ‘2K’ besides picture of Mahatma Gandhi,” sources said.

They said Ahmed had picked up the consignment at village Kaliachak which touches international border of India and Bangladesh , on Monday morning. “The FICN was smuggled from Bangladesh,” they said.

Sources said Ahmed boarded a train to Bhagalpur and from there, he further boarded a bus to Purnia to reach Madhubani, with an aim to dodge security agencies and avoiding any suspicion but got arrested.

“The consignment was to be delivered to a person at Madhubani only. Raids were going on there and Kaliachak to nab more suspects involved in the racket,” sources said.

They said that Ahmed was a habitual offender and he was been to jail for FICN smuggling after getting arrested by SSB at Jainagar in Madhubani near Indo-Nepal border in 2010.

“He languished in jail for four years and came out after Patna high court granted him bail in 2014,” sources said.
