HOG system to generate savings for Vij rail division

Vijayawada: Vijayawada railway division is set to save Rs 4.02 crore annually through Head On Generation (HOG) technology for train operations . The HOG system has been introduced in medium and high speed trains and will tap power from overhead electric equipment and direct it to the coaches. Currently, the cost of power is over Rs 36 per unit, but with HOG technology, the cost will come down to Rs 6 per unit.

As part of the move to energy-efficient models in the railways taken up in mission mode by the Union government, two rakes in the Gudur-Vijayawada Intercity Superfast Express and Vijayawada-Lingampalli Superfast Express have been converted to HOG while another rake is being converted.

Fume-emitting power generator cars will seize to exist in trains that shift to HOG technology. In place of two generator cars, there will be one silent generator on standby. Instead of the second car, there will be LSLRD (LHB Second Luggage, Guard and Divyaang Compartment). The LSLRD will also have the capability to convert power from overhead electric equipment, while providing space for the luggage guard room and additional passengers.
