Hooch tragedy: SAD says former Tarn Taran SSP didn't act on complaint

Amritsar: The Shiromani Akali Dal on Tuesday demanded a CBI probe against former Tarn Taran senior superintendent of police (SSP) Dhruv Dahiya, alleging that he had gotten a complaint against liquor mafia, but he did not act and this evetually led to the hooch tragedy.

Dahiya has now been posted as SSP of Amritsar rural.

In a press conference, former cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia and former chief parliamentary secretary Virsa Singh Valtoha claimed that the then Tarn Taran SSP had refused to take action against the liquor mafia. “He should have been suspended or even dismissed from service, but he has instead been rewarded with yet another plum posting as SSP. Punjab DGP Dinkar Gupta should explain his fondness for him,” they said.

Majithia said only a CBI probe could unravel the police’s links with the liquor mafia. The SAD leaders also claimed that there had been wrongdoings when officer was posted as Khanna SSP.

Former MLA from Ajnala assembly constituency Amarpal Singh Bony, who had defected from SAD to join SAD (Taksali), founded, among others, by his father Rattan Singh Ajnala but later deserted his father’s party to join back SAD, was also present.
