Cows assume high importance in Hindu religion and also in the politics of the BJP. In the run-up to 2014 Lok Sabha elections, it was anticipated that if the BJP wins they will impose a beef ban in the country.

Well, it did not happen on a national scale but some of the state governments ruled by the BJP have done so. In 2017, after winning the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath came up with a similar action plan. He ordered to close down illegal slaughterhouses and a crackdown on Cow Smuggling.
