Hyderabad: GHMC sees under 500 cases for first time in months

HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area for the first time since April 26 reported less than 500 Covid-19 cases in a day on Saturday, even as the entire state saw more than 2,000 cases and 14 deaths. Data showed that the GHMC region reported just 464 cases, giving some reprieve to frontline health workers struggling to bring the numbers under control.



The state as a whole, however, saw 2,256 new Covid-19 cases with several districts including parts of Ranga Reddy, Medchal, Pedapalli and Khammam reporting a large number of cases. With the latest numbers, Telangana has so far reported 77,513 Covid-19 cases while total number of deaths is at 615. The number of patients who have recovered from Covid-19 so far stands at 54,330.

Among the districts, Warangal (urban) with 187 cases, Medchal Malkajgiri with 138 cases, Karimnagar with 101 cases, Gadwal with 95 cases, Sangareddy with 92 cases where among the top districts after GHMC to recorded highest number of cases. Other districts which saw a substantial rise include Kothagudem, Kamareddy, Khammam, Nalgonda, Pedapalli, Rajanna Sircilla and Siddipet. These districts recorded between 60 to 95 cases, while all other districts except Asifabad recorded new cases on Saturday.

Sample testing saw a slight jump with 23,322 being tested on Saturday. With this the total number of samples tested so far in the state since the onset of the pandemic has crossed 5.9 lakh. "We intend to ramp up testing further and have already placed orders for 4 lakh antigen kits... With extensive local spread in rural areas, the key is to test more although we are not waiting for test results and are starting immediate treatment if a patient has any symptoms," said an official from the state health department.
